HENDRY, Robert Arthur  

Robert Arthur Hendry was born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool on the 28th of September 1897 to John Hendry and Catherine Reeves. He was the fifth of their six children, one of whom died at a young age. The family lived at Greig Street and John, originally from Scotland, was a Tinsmith. He died in 1900 at the age of thirty-seven and the family cannot be found in the 1901 census. However by 1911 they were established at 62 Fairview Place in the Dingle area of Toxteth. In that census Catherine gave her occupation as Charwoman while her two older sons were a Shipwright Apprentice and an Errand Boy.

Robert was still at school in 1911 but later worked for Lever Brothers Ltd. at their Port Sunlight factory. He enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in Liverpool, but it is not known when. In October 1918 he was with the 3rd Garrison Battalion which was stationed at Limerick. He was returning home on leave when he travelled with twenty other R.W.F. men on board RMS Leinster on the 10th. He did not survive the sinking, nor was his body recovered.

His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton and also on the Port Sunlight Civic Memorial and Lever Brothers Ltd. Employees.
